Ally Robertson: Players finally look like they back the boss

Darren Moore has made a huge impact since taking charge of the first-team.

It was a fantastic fightback the lads produced to secure a draw against Liverpool last weekend.

All of a sudden, Moore has got the players showing the right attitude.

I’m delighted for him on a personal level.

But it has, of course, led to questions with fans often asking me why the team hasn’t shown the same passion and commitment over the past 10 weeks.

The truth is, it is unacceptable, it is too little, too late.

But something similar did happen to me in my career.

I didn’t get on with Don Howe. He wanted me to play in a way that didn’t suit my game.

And before I knew it, I had spent six months in the reserves.

I used to play and opposition managers would say ‘Why are you not in the first team?’

But Howe didn’t like me. At the time I still thought I was giving 100 per cent.

But I always say, as a professional footballer you just have to go out on to the field and play.

When you start over-thinking things and worrying about things, you quickly lose form.

Howe was sacked and I was relieved. Brian Whitehouse took over on an interim basis and put me straight back in.

And I played better. I had a manager I liked and I had a point to prove. I think it’s been the same for a lot of players at The Hawthorns this season.

There have been issues with both Tony Pulis and Alan Pardew.

And for whatever reason, they haven’t been resolved and have filtered their way on to the pitch.

It was interesting this week because Jake Livermore came out and insisted the players care.

They have certainly looked like they do in the past two outings.

There are some fans who say they are now playing for a move – that they want to still be in the Premier League next year.

Only time will tell if that is true.

If they do care, they will carry on their recent form until the end of the season. And I hope they do.

We have already had Ben Foster and Chris Brunt say they want to stay at the club next season.

But we need a few more to do the same and then we will have a solid base from which to rebuild.

Even if relegation is confirmed this weekend, the players still have time to show they care and want to be here next year.
