Caretaker boss Darren Moore said the Northern Irishman was 'desperate' to play at the weekend but bowed to the medical team's advice.

Evans has missed four of the last nine games through injury, but Moore, who himself is a former centre-back, was pleased with how Craig Dawson and Ahmed Hegazi fared without him.

"Jonny picked up a knock in training this week and we really couldn't risk him with that injury," said Moore. "We've got a squad here. I thought Dawson and Ahmed did really well in central defence.

"I'll pick up from the medical team at the start of the week and assess how his injury is. He was desperate to play but we had to take a decision based on the club.

"We thank him for his honesty, because he's played his part. He might have gone out there and not been at it. We'll assess him on Monday."

Albion drew 1-1 with Swansea City in Moore's first game in charge after Jay Rodriguez's tenth goal of the season was cancelled out 15 minutes from time by Tammy Abraham's header.
