Alan Pardew was encouraged by Chris Brunt's dressing room outburst after the Huddersfield game because he doesn't want his players to accept defeat.

As exclusively revealed by the Express & Star earlier this week, Albion's long-serving Northern Irishman stormed into the dressing room and laid into his team-mates after the 2-1 defeat to the Terriers.

Pardew says Brunt wasn't the only person to voice opinions in a heated exchange after the game but the under-pressure head coach was pleased one of his senior players showed some anger.

He doesn't believe the outburst has damaged his authority and admitted he would be 'foolish' not to take Brunt's thoughts on board considering how experienced the 33-year-old is in the game.

“The stuff which came out of the dressing room on Saturday was disappointing because what goes on in the dressing room should stay in the dressing room in my opinion," he said.

"But we did have drug testers in there so we had people in there not normally associated with the dressing room.

“Having said that I’m not sure if our fans will be disappointed in that. What do they expect us to do? Not have words? Not have conflict in the dressing room after a performance like that?

“It came out about Brunty but it was not just Brunty. The captain (Jonny Evans) and everybody else, myself and John Carver all had opinions on why that performance was such.

"I’d be foolish and not a good manager if I didn’t listen to those comments and look at them in reflection on Monday and Tuesday and come up, hopefully, with some answers for Saturday."

Brunt also raised concerns about Pardew's decision to play 4-4-2 against Huddersfield's five-man midfield, but when the head coach was asked if being questioned in front of the squad damaged his authority, he disagreed.

"I don't think so," he answered. “I’ve always been questioned as a manager. Of course you get players coming into your office and saying why am I not playing? That’s questioning you.

“Your tactical gameplan is your tactical gameplan and you can live or die by that.

"There’s many times after a game I’ll hold my hands up and say I didn’t set ourselves up right. I didn’t actually see a lot wrong with our set up on Saturday if I’m honest.

“Individual performances unfortunately weren’t good enough and that reflects on the manager at the end of the day.

"So forget the tactical gameplan and everything else, if you don’t think Huddersfield are going to come and put you under pressure then you don’t know Huddersfield and our players knew very much what was coming.

"It’s about dealing with it and frustration and anger in the dressing room is part of sport. I have no problem with it to be honest. The only disappointing thing was it came out of the dressing room."

Pardew also admitted that it wasn't the first time where tempers had risen in the dressing room since he's been here.

“I’ve had a couple of games where it’s been a bit fractious," he said. "No one accepts defeat well – and no one should. I don’t want my players to accept defeat.

"The problem is when you play someone like Huddersfield is you’re expected to win and although we respected them of course.

"We prepared for them exactly the same as we would for Chelsea in the eyes of the media and our fans we should beat them and we didn’t so our players understand that."
