West Brom 1 Southampton 2 - Albion player ratings

Albion were knocked out of the FA Cup by Southampton at The Hawthorns yesterday. Here, we rate the players.

Published
James McClean in action. (AMA)

Ben Foster

Made one sharp save but was largely overshadowed by his opposite number, who was man of the match. Nothing he could have done about the goals. 6/10

Craig Dawson

Was at fault for the first goal, when he left Hoedt and missed the ball. Nearly made amends but put a header over from three yards out. 5/10

Gareth McAuley

Made skipper instead of Jonny Evans, but the Premier League is too fast for him now. Nathan Redmond span away from him easily. 5/10

Ahmed Hegazi

Had a header clawed off the line by McCarthy and also hit the bar with a sliced volley. Strangely, nobody had more shots than him and he was unlucky not to score. 6/10

Jonny Evans

Stripped of the captaincy and shunted out to left-back, but he put in a very respectable performance. Whether it's enough to win the fans around is another thing. 6/10

Matt Phillips

Where has last season's Phillips gone? This one flatters to deceive and struggles to get the final ball right too often. 4/10

Gareth Barry

Considering what had happened in midweek, this was frankly, a shocking performance. His sat-nav must have been broken and fuel tank must have been empty because he misplaced passes and looked off the pace. Booed off the pitch when he was hooked in the second half. 3/10

Grzegorz Krychowiak

The Pole is infuriating at times isn't he? Capable of moments of sheer brilliance, like his 50-yard pass to Rondon, but also keeps hold of the ball too long and loses it in dangerous areas. At least there was some intent, which is more than others. 6/10

James McClean - Albion man of the match

Handed a rare start and took his opportunity with both hands. This is McClean at his best, when his non-stop endeavour and fervent passion is harnessed in the right way. Won corners he shouldn’t have, put Southampton under pressure, and his work in the build-up to Rondon’s goal was exemplary. 8/10

Jay Rodriguez

Nearly scored after a Stephens mistake but McCarthy's fingertip save denied him from his only sniff in the game. 6/10

Salomon Rondon

His touch was off in the first half, but then he turned into Robin Van Persie in the second period. That was by far his best goal in Baggies colours. 7/10

Substitutes

Chris Brunt (Barry 72) Couldn’t unlock Southampton. 6/10

Sam Field (Krychowiak 81) Deserves more minutes on the pitch. 6/10

Oliver Burke (Phillips 89) Not enough time to make an impact. 5/10
