The 19-year-old joined Leeds United from the Baggies on deadline day in a deal worth an initial £2.5m and rising to a potential £4m.

He is yet to make his debut for the Championship side and is now facing a lengthy period out injured.

Leeds head coach Paul Heckingbottom said: “This is disappointing news for all concerned, especially for Tyler.

"However, with the help of the experienced medical team at Thorp Arch, he will come back stronger than ever.

“We would love to have Tyler involved as soon as possible but, particularly with our younger players, the club has a duty of care to ensure we don’t rush these situations because we expect Tyler to be an important player for us for years to come.”

Roberts joined Albion at the age of eight and was handed his senior debut by Tony Pulis before impressing on loan at Shrewsbury Town and Walsall.

Leeds signed him on deadline day after Daniel Sturridge's arrival in the West Midlands paved the way for his exit.
