All clubs will wear black armbands and hold a minute’s applause before this weekend’s games.

There was widespread disbelief this week that the league had not organised a nationwide tribute to the former striker, who died early on Monday morning aged 59.

Regis helped break down barriers for black footballers in this country and had an unparalleled impact on British footballing culture.

Gordon Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association, called Premier League chief Richard Scudamore last night to demand why nothing had been organised.

The Premier League were initially planning to leave it up to individual clubs to organise their tributes, but have now announced all 20 will take part.

“The Premier League recognises the important career of Cyrille Regis, and his special role as a trailblazer for black players in modern English football,” read a statement.

“Clubs will mark his contribution with a minute of applause and the wearing of black armbands at this weekend’s matches.

“The League embraces requests from clubs and stakeholders to celebrate the lives of people who have made a unique contribution to the sport.”

Julia Regis, Cyrille's widow, said: "We are overwhelmed by the love and support we have received following the loss of Cyrille.

"It has been hugely comforting for all of the family. Every message has been important to us and this gesture from the Premier League is deeply moving and appreciated.

“We were always so proud of Cyrille and it is comforting to know that the wider game and public feel the same way.”

Taylor also called Shaun Harvey, chief executive of the English Football League, but they have declined to organise a nationwide tribute.

An EFL spokesperson said: "The EFL understands the strength of feeling throughout football for the impact Cyrille Regis made as a player and as a campaigner for black players in the game.

"The EFL would like to reiterate the respect and gratitude that has been shown by the football family and the wider sporting world for the contribution he has made.

“The EFL has communicated to all 72 Clubs, and while the EFL is placing no obligation on its Clubs to organise a tribute, we are offering our full support for any proposed marks of respect they would like to make ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.

“We will always support the recognition of players who have left a lasting legacy on our game.”

Wolves and Aston Villa have both announced plans for a minutes applause in memory of Regis before their games with Nottingham Forest and Barnsley respectively.
