Phillips pulled out of the West Ham game shortly before kick-off after tweaking his hamstring, but is expected to be back available for the home game with Brighton in just over a week's time.

Dawson is being rested after returning from injury to play three bruising games in quick succession.

"Phillips, who we lost before West Ham, won't be involved," confirmed Pardew. “We don't think it's too bad actually.

"He's had some bad injuries and he's very sensitive to problems but we think this one is going to be OK.

"The only other player I will leave out is Dawson because he's played three games and his fatigue levels are very high.

"I cannot risk him because he's been superb for us. The two players who came back and gave us a big lift will be missing in this game and we have to cope with that.

"Dawson's got knocks and strains almost everywhere on his body. He couldn't move in the last period at West Ham, I wanted to replace him myself without anyone looking."

Pardew guaranteed he would pick a 'strong team' at St James Park in an effort to get his first win as Albion boss.

"Our performances have been good," he said. "We’re still looking for that elusive win.

"It was always going to be too much to ask (at the London Stadium). We had 48 hours and a six days rest for West Ham.

"But my goodness which gave such a brave account. I don’t think it’s knocked our confidence.

"Our confidence has to come from the performance levels and our performance level was high again. That’s all we can do, take care of that.

"If our performance level is high and we start threatening teams, like we were threatening West Ham particularly for the first 60 minutes and against Arsenal, we’ll start winning."
