The former centre-back was promoted by Pardew from looking after loan deals for the club’s youngsters to a more prominent role with the first team.

And ‘Big Dave’, as he is affectionately known by club staff and supporters, has impressed Pardew in the past two weeks.

“I wanted to have a good look at Darren Moore,” said Pardew. “I’ve known him from a couple of coaching seminars and me and John Carver have had a conversation about whether we could step him up to the first team.

“In terms of this club, he’s a legend here, I think it works well. I’m enjoying working with him, I’m quite happy with Darren.

“He has the respect of the players, and he’s been given a role which he has been brilliant at.”

Albion lost four senior squad coaches in the aftermath of Tony Pulis’s sacking and only hired one to replace them in the form of Carver.

Gary Megson, Ben Garner, and Mark O’Connor all left when Pardew was appointed, and Gerry Francis - who Pardew wanted to keep - declined an offer to stay.

Despite that, the new boss held fire on appointing any more coaches because he wanted to look at those within the club.

He kept goalkeeping coach Jonathan Gould on and has now been convinced by Moore.

“I think we’ll be okay, that’s what I’ll go with until the summer,” he said. “He’ll be a first team coach, he has certain responsibilities and they’ll be a clearer as we go along.”
