Grzegorz Krychowiak opening up new possibilities for West Brom boss Tony Pulis

Tony Pulis is confident exciting loanee Grzegorz Krychowiak will emerge as a dynamic box-to-box midfielder for Albion this season.

The Baggies boss traditionally plays with a trio in central midfield, and has given Krychowiak that security in numbers so far.

But Pulis reckons the Paris Saint-Germain loanee’s ability to drive forward has opened up the possibility of playing with two in the middle of the park.

For the last two games, Albion have played with two up front because they’ve employed a five-man defence.

But Pulis believes Krychowiak is so good, he can play in a two-man midfield that allows him to keep those two forwards and return to a back four.

“He can do both, he has the legs,” said Pulis. “He’s looking fitter and fitter. He has the legs to get box to box or to sit in and work the space between the centre-halves.

“If you want to play with three, or two, he is good enough to do any of them.”

Krychowiak had an up-and-down game at Arsenal, where he was guilty of losing possession but also carried the ball forward with purpose.

On the whole it’s been an impressive start for the Pole, who cost PSG the best part of £30m last summer.

And his performances in an Albion shirt have earned him a recall into the Poland squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Armenia and Montenegro after this weekend’s match with Watford.

If his quality encourages Pulis to persevere with a two-man strike force, one man who stands to benefit is Jay Rodriguez.

The summer signing has played up front with Hal Robson-Kanu in the last two games, and was unlucky not to score against Arsenal.

And Pulis has been pleased with how the £12m forward has improved in the early weeks of the season.

“He's been brilliant, his fitness levels have improved, he's more comfortable,” said the Baggies boss.

“We're a lot more happier with the way he is now, he's a lot stronger physically in the areas that we thought were a little bit weak and could break. We're pleased with him.”
