New signing Gareth Barry will put Albion in control of more games this season, according to fellow summer addition Jay Rodriguez.

The former Southampton striker is pleased to be wearing the same colours as Barry this term, because he reckons he's been dumped on the floor several times by the formidable midfielder.

But he says the 36-year-old's unrivalled experience in the Premier League will prove invaluable in the coming season.

"His record speaks for itself," said Rodriguez. "Look at how many games he’s played at the top of the Premier League. He’s a great footballer and when you do come up against him, you know about it.

"I’m guessing he probably has put me down sometimes. You always know when you’re playing against him. He's quite tough. But he controls the game, and he’s a class player. He’ll be good to have on your side. I look forward to playing alongside him."

Barry has been brought in to replace 33-year-old Darren Fletcher, who left for Stoke City this summer, but even though he is three years older than Albion's former skipper, Tony Pulis is convinced he can still cut it.

Pulis did his homework before signing the veteran midfielder on a one-year deal with a second year option based on appearances.

“We’ve got no doubts about his fitness at all," said Pulis. "We’ve checked out all the data and Gareth was in the top five of midfielders in the Premier League in terms of distance covered.

“There are no issues with his age. We’ve also shown at this club that senior players who look after themselves can continue to compete consistently at a very high level.

"It has become the norm. We’re just really looking forward to working with him and integrating him into our squad. I think he’s going to be a great addition.”
