The 52-year-old ex-midfielder, who was at Molineux from 1994 to 1997, is heading up a team of six amateur cyclists that set off today, taking on the Giro D’Italia, Le Tour de France and La Vuelta a España consecutively.

Only 39 cyclists – all professionals – have completed the challenge, in the same calendar year, to date.

The group aim to cycle a total of 10,504km in just 63 days, to raise a seven-figure sum for the Centre for Clinical Haematology at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Thomas – who was joined by Lance Armstrong, cycling the Tour de France route for Cure Leukaemia in 2015 – said: “In 2015 we stayed one day ahead of the pros at the Tour de France and this time we are going to the next level to cover all three grand tours.

“When I started preparing in February I picked up a knee injury so I haven’t been able to do as much as I would have liked but over the last six weeks I have been out on the road doing as much as I can.”
