Pepe Mel reveals get-out clause in Hawthorns deal

Albion boss Pepe Mel today raised fresh questions about his Hawthorns future by revealing his contract includes a 'break clause' at the end of the season.

The Spaniard is set for talks with Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace once the club's Premier League future is assured.

But Mel, who signed an 18-month contract in January to succeed Steve Clarke, revealed the deal includes a clause allowing both parties a 'get-out' in the summer.

"My contract finishes after the Stoke City match and then we will have the meeting about the future," said the 51-year-old.

"My contract is private but we need this meeting with the chairman. It is an open contract, not a closed one. But if Pepe Mel says 'yes' and West Brom say 'yes', there is no problem."

Mel's short reign has been beset by off-the-field problems with the sale of Shane Long, controversies involving Nicolas Anelka and Saido Berahino, concerns about his methods from senior players and the departure of key behind-the-scenes ally Dave McDonough.

But he has led the club to the brink of Premier League safety and has now hinted he will need assurances of his own before committing for next season.

"If West Brom stay in the Premier League it is good work," said Mel, who remains keen to add former Real Betis No.2 Roberto Rios to his coaching staff.

"But I am an ambitious coach and I want more than safety. For me it's not enough that we finish 17th next season. I want more.

"It was a difficult situation in January, February and March. There were a lot of problems.

"But in the end, if West Brom are safe, we need to put measures in place so next year is even better. All things are important, not only players and not only staff.

"I want to listen to West Brom and what exactly they want for the future."

Mel has confirmed that former Betis loanee Joel Campbell could be a target if he stays in charge.

The 21-year-old Arsenal winger, who played for Mel on loan in Spain and is currently on loan with Olympiacos, is on a list of possible recruits along with veteran Betis striker Ruben Castro.

Mel said: "Campbell could be a good player for West Brom."
