Mel, who took the Costa Rica international on loan to Real Betis last season, says Campbell could be "a very good player" for the Baggies.

Campbell joined the Gunners from Deportivo Saprissa in 2011 but has yet to play for Arsene Wenger with the 21-year-old spending time on loan with Lorient, Betis and Olympiacos, where he has played this season.

Mel said: "Joel Campbell was a player with me at Betis, a very good player and it is possible for the future at West Brom. He's a good player for West Brom.

"He could play here if I stay here.

"The most important thing now is the next three matches. We need extra point, sure. Arsenal, Sunderland and Stoke City are the most important now.

"Then I will have a meeting with West Brom."

Mel is also known to be interested in veteran Betis striker Ruben Castro.

Meanwhile, Mel revealed defender Gareth McAuley faces a fitness test tomorrow on a groin injury ahead of Sunday's trip to Arsenal.

The Northern Ireland international has missed the games against Manchester City and West Ham but trained for the first time today.

Zoltan Gera, Steven Reid and Liam Ridgewell are all ruled out.
