West Brom's Saido Berahino: Old Trafford winner gave me Premier League platform

Sport | Published:

Striker Saido Berahino today claimed Albion's famous Old Trafford victory can inspire them to pull off an historic Premier League double over Manchester United tomorrow.

Berahino insisted the away defeat of United, in which he scored the winning goal, is a distant memory after the Baggies slipped into relegation danger.

But the young striker reckons memories of the September success can give Pepe Mel's side confidence when they face the Red Devils at home tomorrow looking for their first double over them since 1979.

"The boys know the tough games we've got ahead of us," said Berahino.

"That victory was put behind us a long time ago and we've now got 11 games left and we are all staying together as a unit, working under Pepe Mel and supporting him fully, and making sure we go out and finish the job well.

"But that win gave us a big confidence boost and we will have memories of it and we will go into the game confident, especially with our record at home.

"I don't think the boys have fear when we play at home so we will build on our home games recently and look to get the win that we need."

Berahino netted his first Premier League goal to seal his side's 2-1 victory at Old Trafford – their first since the 1978-79 season.

And he revealed the strike was a key moment in his fledgling career.

"It's the goal that gave me the platform in the Premier League and allowed me to get as many games as I'm getting now," said the 20-year-old.

"It was a good moment but it's a shame I can't remember a lot about it because my mind went blank after I scored.

"I've watched the video but 'live' I can't remember hitting it and running away and celebrating like I did.

"The ball came to me and I struck it. My mind went totally blank so I couldn't remember much.

"A few fans outside the club have said how big it was so it's sunk in now.

"I don't think the lads were really aware straight after the game of what we'd just achieved but as time went by we put it to one side and carried on trying to do the job."
