West Brom must learn lessons, says Shane Long

West Brom striker Shane Long today admitted the Baggies must learn from their mistakes against Manchester City or risk more late Premier League giveaways.

The Baggies lost 2-1 to the 10-man Premier League champions on Saturday despite leading through Long's fifth goal of the season.

And, despite paying tribute to his team's performance, the Ireland international admitted they must find a way to close games out.

"Romelu Lukaku had two or three chances where he really tested the goalkeeper, the crowd were getting behind us and we really felt like we could win the game," said Long.

"That is the confidence we have in the squad at the moment.

"But at the same time we have probably got to learn from these situations.

"We probably should have won at Villa and didn't see it out and it was the same on Saturday.

"But at least we lost in the right way, trying to win the game and take the game to them.

"There aren't many teams that will take points off Manchester City this season. It was very frustrating. I thought we played very well, took the game to them high up the pitch and really caused them problems.

"When we went 1-0 up I was sure we were going to hang onto it but they showed the quality they have.

"It's hard to take now but I'm sure today or tomorrow when we sit down and look back on the performance, there will be a lot of good things we can take from it."

Long pounced on substitute Peter Odemwingie's misdirected shot to prod home the opener before showing a specially-printed t-shirt.

But he admitted the celebrations meant nothing after Edin Dzeko's double for City.

"Pat Frost, the kitman, is a big Baggies fan," said Long.

"I asked him before the game for an 'under-armour' and he said 'I've got a special one for you that might bring you good luck'.

"It said 'we know what we are' – the fans sing that all the time.

"Pat is a good friend of mine so it's nice to celebrate for him.

"Obviously it was nice to get a goal but I was disappointed we didn't get at least one point out of the game.

"Hopefully when I score the next goal we can get the three points."
