The central defenders are fast becoming the new answer to the legendary John Wile-Ally Robertson paring which provided the defensive rock in Albion's last great top-flight team 30 years ago.

Goalkeeper Ben Foster regards the duo as one of the best central-defensive partnerships in the Premier League

"We can be better and we both want to be better," said McAuley.

"We both want to develop the partnership and we both hate conceding goals. It is a pretty natural fit. We still want to learn and we learn from each other.

"We talk about our games and that's good. I've played with people before who don't want to talk about things and what they should have done better.

"When you do that it all helps to improve as an individual, improves the partnership and that only helps out your team.

"We hit it off straight away and it comes down to trust as well, which is a big thing in a centre-half partnership. I know he's going to cover me and he knows I'm going to cover him," added the Northern Ireland international.
