Albion are leading the race to sign Wales international midfielder David Vaughan on a free transfer from Blackpool.

The Baggies have held preliminary talks with the 28-year-old and he is keen on a move to The Hawthorns.

The out-of-contract Vaughan has also spoken to Sunderland and Rangers and has been offered a new deal by Blackpool after sweeping the board in their end-of-season awards.

But the Baggies are believed to be in pole position to sign the former Crewe man, who earned rave reviews for his performances in his first Premier League season.

Vaughan held talks with Blackpool on Tuesday to discuss extending his stay at Bloomfield Road despite their relegation.

But, although he has been offered a new three-year deal, he is reluctant to return to the Championship and both the Baggies and Sunderland could dwarf Blackpool's salary offer.
