Josh Gordon out to find tonic to lift Walsall spirits

Josh Gordon insists Walsall are still trying to find the right attacking ‘formula’ as he implores the team to create more chances.

The Saddlers strikers have been largely starved of service in recent weeks with opportunities few and far between.

Although an improved performance on Saturday saw Gordon set up strike partner Caolan Lavery for the equaliser, they still only managed a draw against bottom side Grimsby Town.

Now, Gordon insists they are still working on the finer details in the final third.

“We’re trying to find that formula that is going to help us turn that corner,” he said.

“We haven’t scored as many goals as we’d like but the form hasn’t been great as a whole team.

“We’ve been trying to find different solutions with different personnel in the games. Me and Lavs have played up front together previously and done well. We know what we both want. When I get down the line I know where he’s going to be and I cross the ball in.

“Since the gaffer has taken over we’re trying to find the right formation and personnel to click and get the result.

“It’s not been a set team with a certain formation and way and playing, at the minute we’re trying to find the right things to get the results.

“Exeter was a good game where we didn’t concede and at Cambridge too we looked good. We’re trying to find what makes it click to finish the season as strong as possible.”

Gordon has been left disappointed having only netted five times this season but after assisting Lavery at the weekend the 26-year-old believes they can both take confidence from it.

“The main thing is working hard and doing what’s right for the team to get results.

“Obviously I want to be scoring goals but it’s not like I’m missing four or five chances a game. The chances haven’t been coming and that’s not just down to me, that’s down to the team as well.

“We tried to cross more (against Grimsby) to look more of a threat and I got the cross to Lavs and he scores the goal.

“That’s just as much of a goal for me as it is for Lavs because it gives us both a boost now to go into the next game.

“We’re looking more solid at the back and now we’re trying to find the right things to help us get goals.”

Although the result against Grimsby – and the previous draw to Southend – came in for criticism from supporters, Gordon insists the ‘do not lose’ attitude of the team has set them up to attack in upcoming games.

He added: “We battled hard together, came back 1-0 down, and now we can go into Harrogate and try and play a bit more football to get a result.

“Other players have tried to cross the ball as much as possible and we asked the defence questions. We looked more of a threat because balls are going into the box and making them do a lot of work.

“When you’re playing the teams down there who are trying to get close to you, the aim is not to lose.

“Obviously it would have been nice to win but when you’re coming away from home and playing teams who haven’t got anything to lose and are coming for the scrap, you have to try and take what you can out of it.

“We did that and did it from going 1-0 down.”
