The 19-year-old midfielder was on of several players out of contract in the summer, but alongside Liam Kinsella he has now signed new terms until 2023.

A product of the academy, Bates has impressed in Saddlers colours this season and is eager to pay the club back for backing him.

“This club is close to my heart, they gave me my chance at 15/16 to kick on and go from there,” Bates said.

“I’m not looking back and not resting on my laurels.

“Of course, I’m buzzing to get the contract done and I can’t wait to play more games in the near future.”

“I’m still a young lad and I’m still developing and it’s good to get that reward, I’ve played a few games and I’m ready to play a lot more.

“Kins and I get on really well. I’ve known him since I was about 15/16. I looked up to him as a first team player and I always wanted to break through, I did that as a second-year scholar and I haven’t looked back and I’m ready to kick on.”
