Walsall's Liam Roberts is working hard to cut out costly errors

The 25-year-old has been a stalwart in the Saddlers side this season after several impressive displays.

But the academy product has let slip a handful of individual errors this season, including Carlisle's 94th minute winning goal on December 29, which looped over the shot stopper.

Despite his disappointment in those errors, Roberts takes a positive approach as he aims to learn from those mistakes.

“That’s exactly it, it doesn’t matter how old you get you still need to learn and you still need to work on it," he said.

"So for me personally, I was disappointed with the last goal and you just have to think – can I live and can I learn from it?

"You have to go into the next game full of confidence.

"At the end of the day you’re a human going to make mistakes, you’ve just got to make sure that you learn from it."

Manager Darrell Clarke was openly critical of his goalkeeper after the Carlisle defeat, but he's been left impressed by his character to bounce back – which resulted in a last minute save to secure a 2-1 win at Salford just two games later.

"Some people think I'm very critical but Robbo, I love him to bits," Clarke said.

"I think he's been outstanding this season.

"He's going to make errors and it won't mean I'm not raging when he does.

"But he wins us an extra two points at the end (against Salford) with a fantastic save, which he's done on a few occasions this season.

"I don't think he's been overworked, I think he's done the basics well.

"There won't be many games up and down the country where you don't need a goalie to make one very, very good save.

"That's the character that I like to see after a mistake.

"I want to see them not do the mistakes obviously.

"I have no problems with the shot stopping, I just thought he should have saved that one (against Carlisle).

"But I'm always harsh on goalie's, Maik Taylor will tell you."
