Darrell Clarke hoping for two new Walsall recruits this week

Boss Darrell Clarke wants to sign two players this week in a bid to end Walsall’s attacking woes.

The Saddlers failed to find the target again on Saturday as they fell to a 3-0 loss at Plymouth.

It means Walsall have scored just two goals in their five league matches so far – with that barren spell leaving them 19th in the table.

Clarke has until a week today to bring in new players, with the transfer window officially closing on September 2.

But with his team struggling to find the target, the boss wants his new additions in ahead of this weekend’s clash with Grimsby.

“I’d like to bring in two attack-minded players by the end of the window and I’ll make sure that happens,” Clarke said. “It is easier said than done, you have your one target, you two target and your three target. But we will have two new players.

“Hopefully they will be with us before Grimsby to be honest with you because we need a little bit more and something a bit different up top so that when we are dominating games we take our opportunities.”

In a performance that has mirrored their season so far, Walsall enjoyed more possession against a Plymouth side widely expected to be in the race for automatic promotion this season.

They also got into a number of dangerous areas but every time their final ball let them down.

And Clarke says everyone can see where the team is falling down.

“It was always going to be very difficult to change the momentum in the club with the amount of changes that needed to happen.” the manager continued. “I get that, I think the majority of fans get that – they have that understanding.

“But we want to do it quicker – that is why I am disappointed we have only got five points after five games.

“I think we deserve more, I think our performances warrant more. But you don’t get those points unless you put the ball in the back of the net.

“And that’s where we are struggling at the minute.”
