A poll on the Express & Star website asked supporters if they were pleased to see the 41-year-old land the top job at the Banks’s Stadium.

And a staggering 83 per cent voted ‘yes’ – with fans backing Clarke to build a team capable of battling it out for promotion in League Two.

Supporter Lincoln Davies said: “I think we have made a great choice.

“Always rated him, he won promotions at his two previous clubs and he’s a straight-talking no-nonsense winner with the highest coaching badge a manager can have.

“Excited for next season now.”

Fellow fan Rob Simpson added: “What’s not to like? He’s young, hungry with a point to prove and works with limited resources.”

Meanwhile, Clarke will meet the media for the first time as Walsall boss tomorrow.

A press conference has been scheduled to take place at the Banks’s Stadium from 10am.
