Matt Jarvis: I will serve up Walsall goals for Andy Cook

The 32-year-old joined the Saddlers on loan from Norwich last week and made his debut in the FA Cup loss at Bolton. Following Jarvis’s arrival, manager Dean Keates said he signed the winger because he felt Cook would thrive on his delivery.

And that proved to be the case in Greater Manchester with the striker netting his 12th goal of the campaign with a smart header from an inviting Jarvis cross.

“The first goal at Bolton was really good play,” Jarvis said. “There was some great link-up play and for a wideman like me, it’s great to have someone like Andy Cook to aim at.

“He is massive for us. You can see by the way he holds up play, he flicks the ball on and that allows us to get runners in behind.

“But to have a striker who can head it like that is great. Hopefully I can set up a lot more for him.”

Jarvis claimed two assists on Saturday with the former West Ham man also setting up George Dobson for his deflected strike.

The match was the first time the winger had played in two-and-a-half years after being plagued by injuriesy problems.

And manager Dean Keates believes his performances are only going to improve.

“It was only ever going to be a case of giving him 60 or 70 minutes at Bolton – he hadn’t played for a long time but he showed what he’s about,” the manager said.

“He played a couple of under-23 games for Norwich before he came in and you could see his quality for Andy Cook’s header.

“He is only going to get stronger and better.”

Jarvis has a two-year-old son who is yet to see him play due to his injury problems.

But his little boy will finally get to watch did dad when Walsall take on Scunthorpe on Saturday.

And the winger admitted it will be an emotional occasion for him.

“That is going to be fantastic,” Jarvis added.

“It has been horrendous the last couple of years. It will be very emotional and very satisfying for him to be there and see my play.”
