FA Cup second round replay: Sunderland 0 Walsall 1 - Report and pictures

Liam Kinsella was the unlikely hero as his screamer saw Walsall win at Sunderland and advance to the third round of the FA Cup.

Dean Keates' Saddlers frustrated the hosts in the second round replay and Kinsella's moment of magic proved to be the difference.

His rocket into the top corner from well outside of the box sent the 201-strong travelling faithful into raptures and set up a third round tie at Bolton.

Walsall were without star striker Andy Cook, who is a Newcastle fan. Cook was banned, after being booked in each of their previous two ties - the 1-1 draw with the Black Cats at the Banks's, in which he scored, and the 3-2 first round triumph over Coventry, in which he also netted.

So leading the line were Morgan Ferrier and Josh Gordon in a 4-4-2 formation.

The hosts, meanwhile, had former Albion youngster Jerome Sinclair in their starting line-up, as well as ex-Everton full-back Bryan Oviedo.

After the long trip to the northeast, the Saddlers supporters were keen to make themselves heard.

They outsang a subdued home crowd in the first quarter of an hour. And they nearly had something to shout about as Kieron Morris shaved the side netting with a left-footed long-range drive.

Morris then played a delicious through-ball to Josh Ginnelly. The left-winger beat the offside trap and had the opportunity to shoot first time, but decided to cut inside and his side-footed shot was kept out by Jon McLaughlin - and then cleared from danger.

Sunderland, who had Chris Maguire booked for tripping Morris early on, then started to grow into the game slightly, with Duncan Watmore - before being cautioned for a late lunge on Jon Guthrie - testing Liam Roberts from a tight angle. Max Power smacked one wide, too.

But another great opportunity came along for Walsall. Ferrier did superbly, spinning away from Tom Flanagan and playing the ball across goal to Gordon, but, somehow, McLaughlin made the save - and won a free-kick after being clattered into by Gordon.

Ginnelly flashed an attempt wide towards the end of the first half, which would have left Keates pleased with his players' attitude and application - but disappointed they were unable to convert at least one of their chances against a below-par Black Cats.

The second period started pretty much as the first ended. The Saddlers seemed comfortable, Sunderland short of ideas.

And then, in the 53rd minute, Kinsella took centre stage.

A midfielder not exactly renowned for his shooting prowess, this being just his second professional goal, he took everyone by surprise as he thundered home from 30 yards, leaving McLaughlin helpless.

Midfield partner Isaiah Osbourne tried to follow suit a few minutes later but ballooned the ball high and wide.

The Black Cats looked to freshen things up on the hour as heavy hitter Lee Cattermole and Josh Maja replaced Dylan McGeouch and Sinclair, who the home supporters were happy to see go off.

And they did start to improve. Watmore had a strike deflect wide, which came about a misplaced pass by Russell Martin, and Luke O'Nien headed a few yards past the post.

Walsall were holding their own, though.

Sunderland's fans and players were getting more restless with each minute that passed.

O'Nien received a yellow card for a reckless tackle amid cries for an equaliser.

The Black Cats made their final throw of the dice as Bali Mumba went on for Watmore, but that desperately-sought leveller ended up elusive.

Interestingly, Keates opted not to use any of his substitutes as they saw out a victory over Jack Ross's men at the third time of asking this campaign.

And while the upcoming tie at the University of Bolton Stadium - due to take place on Saturday, January 5 - is not the most mouth-watering, the Saddlers will see it as an encounter that is very much winnable.

Especially with the financial uncertainty which is surrounding the lowly Championship outfit at the moment.

If they go on to win that one, they will pocket £135,000 - after getting £54,000 for a triumph that will not be forgotten any time soon.
