George Dobson: Walsall can switch it around

George Dobson believes Walsall have to be tactically flexible if they are to maintain their impressive start to the season.

The Saddlers, who remain unbeaten in League One, have primarily lined up in a 4-4-2 system since the appointment of Dean Keates as boss.

But the manager switched things up for Saturday’s trip to Barnsley with the team deployed in a 4-1-4-1 formation which became a 4-3-3 when they attacked.

And Dobson feels it’s crucial Walsall are able to change their shape.

“We have always known we can’t just stick to the same formation – it can’t just be Plan A forever,” Dobson said.

“It’s good to play a lot of different formations so we can adapt.

“In games things are going to change. If we need to change from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 we need to be ready.

“We adapted well at Barnsley. We were against a team who are tipped to finish in the top two, and we were disappointed not to get all three points.

“I think that shows how much confidence we have in each other and in the team to give it our best shot in every game we play.”

Dobson believes the addition of Connor Ronan from Wolves has given Walsall more options. And he admits he has been impressed with his new team mates ability on the ball.

“Connor has made a big difference because he is an attack-minded, creative midfielder which is something we didn’t really have,” Dobson continued.

“He now gives is us that option of going to a three in midfield. He is a lovely player. On the ball he is a delight to watch and play with. He has fitted in perfectly.

“The way he takes the ball in tight spaces and can keep the ball under pressure, it’s so valuable for us.

“When the ball keeps turning over, it’s hard because you have to do so much running. When Connor is in the team, he gives us a different option.”

Meanwhile, Saddlers midfielder Jordon Sangha has joined National League North side Ashton United on loan until January.
