The centre-back, who was arguably the Saddlers standout player, was injured in a collision with Ryan Sweeney with a little over 10 minutes remaining.

Speaking after the 3-0 loss, boss Dean Keates said the 20-year-old was rushed to hospital amidst fears he broke both the fibula and tibia bones in his leg.

And if the injury does prove as serious as feared, it means Roberts is likely to miss the entire 2018/19 campaign.

"He’s gone to the hospital and the early signs from the physio, and from what their staff have said, is it doesn’t look great," Keates said.

"We think his fibula and tibia have both been broken and he’s gone to A&E now.

"If that’s the case, if we see him again this season it’ll be full credit to the medical department and the lad.

"We’ll have to see what the initial X-Ray and report come back as."

Roberts was Walsall's young player of the season last year.
