Walsall's Tyler Roberts enjoying the pressure

Tyler Roberts insists he is relishing the pressure that comes with being Walsall’s leading centre-forward.

The 18-year-old, who is on loan from Albion, has wowed Saddlers fans with a string of impressive performances since moving to the Banks’s Stadium in August.

A Wales under-21 international, Roberts flew back from Lichtenstein last Friday to take a place among the substitutes for Walsall’s 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury last weekend.

But the teenager is set to be restored to the starting line-up for the visit of Blackpool tomorrow, with supporters hopeful he can fire them to victory.

And while the youngster has to contend with that expectation, he insists it’s when under pressure that he produces his best football.

“I like the expectation,” the striker declared.

“I like going out there and knowing people are expecting me to play well.

“It gives me something else to prove. If people want me to play well and expect me to play well, then it gives me confidence.

“That kind of expectation shows I’m doing something right – otherwise it wouldn’t be there.

“It’s something I’ve always had to deal with, especially being as a striker,

“I’ve got to score goals. It’s kind of like ‘Tyler should be scoring today’ so that kind of expectancy has always been on me.

“It wasn’t as big at Albion playing in the under-23s as it is here. But I’m enjoying it.”

Walsall have so far endured an inconsistent start to the 2017/18 campaign with Jon Whitney’s side having won three, lost four and drawn five of their opening 12 games in League One.

That run means they are currently sat 16th in the table.

And Roberts revealed the group is now determined to put together a run of wins to quickly climb the division.

“We have played against and put in good performances against the majority of the top six,” the striker continued.

“If we keep that kind of level then we can beat anyone.

“We want to go on a run starting with Blackpool tomorrow.

“I’m expecting a big test. Obviously they have just come up so they are looking to push on again and they have got confidence from last season.

“But I think if we play as well as we can, we will deal with it.”

Roberts watched on Monday as Wales’s hopes of reaching next year’s World Cup were ended by the Republic of Ireland.

The forward, who qualifies through his grandparents, has previously been on standby for the senior Wales squad and has also spent time training with Chris Coleman’s side.

And he admits he harbours hopes of playing for his country at the European Championships in 2020.

“Wales first scouted me when I was 14-years-old – that was my first taste of international football.” he said. “England looked at me when I was 16 but I felt Wales was the better fit for me.

“It was a big disappointment to lose to Ireland.

"It would have been a good thing to be looking forward to, the World Cup, and trying to break through into that squad.

“But it wasn’t meant to be so I’ll look forward to the Euros no.

“I’ve got a bit more time to break through for that, so we’ll see.”
