The Saddlers are to face their local rivals in pre-season friendlies with Championship Villa visiting the Banks's on July 18 before the Premier League Baggies arrive on July 26.

O'Connor began his career as a youth player at Villa before leaving to join Bournemouth in 2005.

And he admits he is looking forward to locking horns with his former side as well as Tony Pulis' Albion.

"They’re good fixtures for supporters and players alike," the experienced defender said.

"You want to test yourself against teams in a higher league.

"Both teams bring a good following and it’s always a good atmosphere at the Banks’s.

"After a break like we’ve had, you look forward to getting back into a game situation.

"Ultimately though it’s all about preparing for that first game of the league season.”

Despite a number of Walsall's players reporting for training sessions throughout pre-season, today marks the first day all members of the squad were expected at the club's Essington base.

And O'Connor was pleased to back with the group.

“Physically and mentally, I feel ready to go now,” the 32-year-old said.

"It was nice to have some time off and spend time with the family.

"It gives you a chance to recover after a tough season.

"We finished last season quite early so it has felt like quite a long break, and after a while you do start to get itchy feet.

“You miss the day-in day-out of going out on the training field and playing, and you really look forward to the games again.”
