Walsall transfer news: Jon Whitney looking to make less loan signings for Walsall in the future

Jon Whitney says he plans to make less loan signings in the future - as the boss looks to add a winger and striker to his Walsall squad.

The Saddlers supremo snapped up defenders Eoghan O'Connell and Scott Laird on temporary deals from Celtic and Scunthorpe this week.

And the boss is also in talks to sign a striker and winger - with one player potentially arriving on loan and the other in a permanent deal.

Whitney has so far signed six players on loan this season with Jason McCarthy and George Dobson still at the Banks's and Kevin Toner and Josh Ginnelly having moved on.

But he hopes to make less temporary signings next season - with Whitney believing the club is still dealing with the mass exodus of the summer.

"Ideally, in the next window, we won't make as many loan signings," he said.

"But with the mass exodus we had in the summer, we are still in a position where we need to utilise the loan market.

"I'd rather make permanent signings. That makes it easier for me to get a really settled team and push on.

"For now though I'd like a couple more. A striker and a winger. It will probably be one loan and one permanent.

"But my targets are other people's targets so it's a bit of a poker game at the moment.

"A lot of deals in the window happen right at the end though. But if we can I'd much rather get the players in early and get them settled."
