The 28-year-old has impressed both on and off the pitch since joining the Saddlers on loan from Scunthorpe at the end of August.

Laird's current deal expires in January but the left-back admitted last week he would love to extend his stay with the club. And Whitney revealed he will be doing everything he can to keep the former Preston North End man in his squad.

"Scott is somebody I would really like to keep," the boss said.

"I know we have got him until January but I don't mind saying I'd like to keep him as a part of the group.

"We brought him in for experience because he brings a calm head.

"I'll be doing what I can to keep him here long term."

Meanwhile, Whitney is keeping his fingers crossed Walsall's League One clash at MK Dons on November 12 will go ahead.

As it stands, only Andreas Makris will miss the trip to Stadium mk after he was called up by Cyprus.

"I don't want the break – we are on a good run and I want to keep playing games," the manager said.
