The Saddlers narrowly missed out on a place in the Championship after finishing third in the division last year before losing to eventual winners Barnsley in the play-offs.

A lot was made last season of Walsall's success being the result of a five-year plan which began when Dean Smith took charge in 2011.

Now with Jon Whitney at the helm and a host of players out of contract, a summer of transition potentially lies ahead.

But Gamble believes the good work done over the past five years will ensure the club remains competitive.

"If certain players do move on then it is only natural there will be a short period of transition," he said. "But overall I think the foundations are here to once again sustain a promotion push again next year.

"We're well on track with where we want to be."

in terms of the philosophy of the club whilst at the same time improving facilities at the stadium and training ground so hopefully the transition to next season will be fairly seamless."

Meanwhile, Romaine Sawyers continues to be linked with a move away from the Saddlers with Brentford and Wigan believed to be the two clubs leading the chase for his signature.
