Probe after vile tweets to Walsall striker Craig Westcarr

An investigation is under way after Walsall FC striker Craig Westcarr was the victim of vile Twitter abuse following the team's victorious match with Sheffield United.

The 28-year-old, who scored the Saddlers' equaliser in a 2-1 win yesterday, was subjected to a stream of abusive and sick messages from a Sheffield fan named Joshua Bunting.

Several messages were homophobic, but in one message, Bunting told Westcarr he 'hoped you get ran over by a train' and also wished the former Nottingham Forest hitman 'several terminal illnesses'.

Westcarr himself re-tweeted the messages before adding: "Don't think any player should have to read stuff like what I've retweeted from this idiot."

Bunting later deleted the messages before telling Westcarr: "Soz Craig" and then adding a further apology with: "I'll be the one the (sic) admit I was wrong and said some bad things in the heat of the moment I'll retract everything I have said to you."

Walsall have confirmed they have reported the incident to the social networking site.

It comes as police continue to investigate vile racist abuse directed at football pundit Stan Collymore on Twitter but say they have yet to make any arrests.

The 42-year-old reported the tweets last month to Cannock Police after several users posted abusive messages to him.
