Emotional Sharon Spencer, 44, from Bentley, turned up at Buckley's latest book signing at The Saddlers Club as a tribute to her dad Terry Wakelam, 66, a lifelong fan who died on November 16 at the age of 66.

Buckley, Walsall's record goalscorer who has released a book, Pass and Move, was the favourite player of her dad, who used to take her to Fellows Park during the striker's glory days of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

"He was the one player I remember," said the mother-of-two, whose son Andrew Spencer, aged 10, continued the family tradition by attending games with her dad Terry.

"My dad was football-mad but Walsall was his team and Alan was my dad's favourite. He always said he had time for the fans and when I met him last night, he was so down to earth and had so much time for people. I felt I had to go for my dad – he would have loved to have been there and it was worth it.

"Alan signed a photo of my dad for me and I took it home to my mother.

"It was only his funeral last week and me and my mum have been going through things and when I showed her, she was quite emotional."
