Grigg is rated as 50-50, following his hamstring injury, for tomorrow's trip to Yeovil.

Paterson reckons the 19-goal Northern Ireland star can be the division's top scorer – as the Saddlers prepare to face current leader Paddy Madden tomorrow.

Walsall travel to Madden's Yeovil three points behind the seventh-placed Glovers knowing a win could move them to within a point of the play-offs.

Grigg is on the brink of becoming the first Saddlers player to score 20 goals in a season since Jorge Leitao 12 years ago.

And Paterson insisted he can top the charts. "There's no reason why he can't go and be top scorer in the league," declared Paterson.

"The way we get forward and create, he's always going to get chances.

"Lately he's been putting them away. He works for his own goals as well. You might not see it from the sides, but he chases every ball down and makes a lot of chances.

"He'll go on to bigger and better things."

Madden has smashed 21 goals in the league while Coventry's Leon Clarke has 19 (11 for Scunthorpe) and Grigg is third on 18 – 19 including his Johnstone's Paint Trophy strike.

Grigg – who is likely to face Coventry on?Monday – scored just four goals last season but Paterson hailed his impact. "It's not so easy to come into the first team and do that," said the 21-year-old. "It's a credit to the gaffer giving us confidence."
