Alex Nicholls today insisted Walsall must match boss Dean Smith's ambition and backed the manager to find the Saddlers' winning formula.

The winger reckons Smith's skills can arrest a run of three straight defeats and propel the Saddlers back up League One.

Nicholls revealed the boss, who has targeted promotion, laid out his blueprint for success at the start of the season and knows the players must now live up to it.

"The gaffer turned around at the start of the season and told us what he wanted and asked 'does anyone not want that?' No-one stood up and said no," he said, ahead of Saturday's visit of winless Scunthorpe.

"We're all pushing in the same direction, it's just a bit of a kick in the teeth recently.

"The gaffer is a very ambitions man and we all are as players.

"No disrespect to teams like Brentford but they're a middle of the table team pretty much every season and if you want to achieve things in the league they are the teams you should be beating – the Yeovils and the Brentfords."
