There was an early scare for the visitors when a long throw from Josh Curry was deflected against James Wren’s crossbar in the fourth minute.

The match ebbed and flowed without much incident before Lowestoft broke the deadlock just past the half-hour mark when captain Adam Smith’s corner was hooked home by Jake Reed on the turn.

Stourbridge improved on a flat first-half display with Luke Benbow firing a free-kick at the keeper before the golden chance to level went begging.

Mills was brought down by Curry but had his penalty saved with the man who conceded the spot-kick then sliding in to deny substitute Kaiman Anderson on the rebound.

Lowestoft largely kept Stour at bay from there with Shaun Bammant close to wrapping up the points late in the day.

The defeat was made all the more damaging by league leaders Kettering Town bagging a late winner to beat Needham Market 3-2.
