Glassboys fall at the leaders

Two goals from Greg Mills was not enough as Stourbridge lost 4-2 in a battle of the Southern Premier Central top two.

The Glassboys made an excellent start with defender Aaron Hayden putting an overhead kick just wide before Luke Benbow showed some excellent trickery to beat his marker only for Paul White to deny him with an excellent save.

The visitors continued to press and were finally rewarded on the half-hour when Benbow was fouled inside the area and Mills drilled home the resulting spot-kick.

That goal lifted Stourbridge to the top of the table but it wasn’t to last as it also spurred the hosts into action, scoring twice in three frantic minutes.

It was all square on 38 minutes as Lindon Meikle was given too much time just outside the area and his shot went over keeper James Wren and dipped just under the bar.

The Poppies then nosed ahead when an excellent cross from Marcus Kelly found Michael Richens, who used his strength to hold off his marker and steer the ball into the bottom corner.

Stour started the second half strongly and duly levelled just after the hour mark when Mills smashed home his second of the game.

But the game was to turn once again 10 minutes later when Dan Holman rounded off a sweet passing move moments before Wren pulled off an excellent save to deny Kelly.

Not that the Poppies striker would be denied for long as it was Kelly who wrapped up the points with a neat finish in injury time.

Sylvan Ebank-Blake returned to haunt Halesowen Town, netting the second for Barwell in a 2-0 win.

Eliot Putman had put the visitors ahead eight minutes before the interval before the former Wolves striker sealed the win on 76 minutes.

Rushall Olympic needed penalties to beat Wednesfield in the Walsall Senior Cup, progressing 6-5 after the game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

n Hednesford loanees Callum Coyle and Dan Sweeney were last night recalled by parent club Solihull Moors to play in their 2-0 Birmingham Senior Cup defeat to Nuneaton Borough.

Both impressed for the Pitmen, and the club are hoping to take them back on loan.
