Stafford Rangers chairman: We didn’t want any more upheaval

Stafford Rangers chairman John Bromley says the board made Alex Meechan and Andy Fearn joint-managers to avoid any further turmoil.

Meechan and Fearn came to Boro with manager Steve Burr in the summer, but are now in charge after Burr stepped down.

And Bromley said the decision was made in order to limit the upheaval of Burr’s resignation.

“Basically we’re trying to keep a settled ship because all the players know them,” he said. “When we started the season off we got put into the (Evo-Stik) North (division).

“All the players left, bar three. We had to start a new team. We’ve got enough trouble to avoid going further down. I didn’t want all the turmoil again.

"You get a new manager, you have to get new players, and you’re on the same merry-go-round.

“If the players wanted to leave, then it would be different.

“But they didn’t. We don’t want any more disruption. We’ll give them a bit of time to settle down.

“If they lose every game of course I’ll change my mind, but we’ll give them a fair crack of the whip.”

Meecham and Fearn took charge of their first game on New Year’s Day, when Rangers threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2.

And they now want to see a response from their team.

“We’ve only had an hour with them in the training pitch but the wheels are in motion to stop goals being conceded,” said Meechan. “We want to lift the cloud above the club and try and make it a positive place.

“Obviously you’re judged on results. The boys are a little bit vulnerable at the minute, the confidence is low. We can press that self-destruct button.

"Saturday’s a different game and hopefully we can go on and play for the whole 90 minutes.”
