The Rangers chief admits they have not performed as well as he would have liked in the Evo-Stik Premier this campaign.

They are currently 17th out of the division’s 24 teams, on 38 points after 31 games.

Boro ended last term 13th with 63 points, and Kitching said: “We have got targets in mind, there’s a points figure we need to get to, the aim of the club and this squad is to make sure we improve on last season’s performance – wins, points and position

“For me, we need to beat last year. If we’ve done that, I’ve done what I said.

“We got promoted season before last, (then had a) season of consolidation.

“As it stands, things aren’t as rosy, I thought we’d be further ahead.

“Injuries and suspensions aren’t helping but I still think we’re capable of finishing high up the table if we get that consistency.”

Rangers travel to Farsley Celtic tomorrow.

Kitching’s side are yet to win on the road in the league in 2018.

“We’re confident of getting three points against anybody in the division, you’ve just got to look at the results,” said Kitching.

“Apart from Altrincham and maybe Shaw Lane there are no stand-out teams.

“You’ve got to look at results week to week.

“There’s no pattern to it, get your strongest team out, being bang at it on the day, that’s what we have been drumming into the players, we can compete against the top sides.

“We can’t be good one week and then poor the next, it’s got to be more consistent.”
