Injury-time hero: Spirit is sky high at Stafford Rangers

Injury-time hero Kieren Westwood says the spirit in the Stafford Rangers dressing room is sky-high following their thrilling mid-week victory.

The 22-year-old wing-back curled in a 94th-minute winner in Boro’s 3-2 win over Sutton Coldfield Town after conceding a 93rd-minute equaliser.

It extends Stafford's unbeaten run to four games and makes it five wins out of the last seven in all competitions.

“Everyone went mad in the changing room," said Westwood. "The spirit now, because of the way we won the game, is really good going into Saturday.”

Westwood was signed in September after returning from an unhappy spell in America and has impressed since his arrival.

The left wing-back is yet to taste defeat in the league and Tuesday’s winner was his first goal for the club.

He’s delighted to get his confidence back following a frustrating period at Stourbridge last season.

“I left Stratford Town to go to Stourbridge and played two games in a couple of months, just sat on the bench,” said Westwood. “I lost my fitness and my confidence.

"Then I went to America in the summer for a two-year scholarship but came back six weeks later because I missed the standard of English football.

“I’m so happy to be playing again. The Stafford fans are really good, it’s brilliant playing in front of five or six hundred each week. It’s a big club, which I didn’t realise until I went there.”

Westwood was the hero on Tuesday in what was a dramatic finish, and he reckons Boro are building up a head of steam in the Evo-Stik Premier.

"They scored, and I asked the ref how long, he said 30 seconds, so we went straight up the other end,” he explained. “It was just a bit a scrappy, they couldn’t clear it, I got it on the edge of the box and curled it top corner.

“We went up to 12th but we’ve got a few games in hand so we can challenge for the play offs. That's the aim. If we finish mid-table it will be an underachievement.”
