Corby 1 Hednesford 2 - Report
Following Tuesday’s 5-1 thrashing of Bromsgrove Sporting, the Pitmen looked to build momentum as they travelled to Northamptonshire to commence their Buildbase FA Trophy campaign against Southern League Division One Central outfit Corby Town. The Steelmen had already played two games in the competition seeing off Soham Town Rangers and Halesowen Town. A good start in the league sees Corby top their division with 15 points from seven games.
Heavy rain in the build up to the kick off created a heavy pitch which caused problems for both sides. The Pitmen struggled to get their passing as fluent as against Bromsgrove and were limited to long range efforts from Dan Turner, Anthony Dwyer and Taylor Allen. Louis Dodds had a promising opening snuffed out on the edge of the box. At the other end Andy Wycherley coped well with Corby's long balls into the area. Jack Hallahan lost possession, giving Stephen Diggin a run at goal, however Wycherley tipped his effort onto the roof of the net for the game to remain goalless at half time.
The Pitmen emerged from the dressing room a full five minutes before the restart, and started the half brightly. The pitch continued to hinder both teams, and it looked increasingly likely that it would play a deciding role in the outcome of the fixture. However the game was settled by three goals in six minutes. Firstly Dwyer put the Pitmen ahead in the 57th minute with a clinical strike from the edge of the box. Dwyer was then provider as he squared the ball to Hallahan whose shot beat Craig Hill in goal for the Steelmen, who perhaps should have done more to keep it out. Finally Jordan Crawford pulled one back for the home side in the 63rd minute with a wonder strike from the corner of the Pitmen box.
The Pitmen controlled the ball well for large spells of the rest of the game, with Corby becoming increasingly frustrated as they were unable sustain any significant periods of pressure or find an equaliser.
