As keeper Leigh Overton tried to gather the rebound Joey Butlin nipped in to put the ball in the net, adjudged to have fouled the keeper.
The half flew by but with defences on top clear goal chances were at a premium.
Chasetown made a really positive start to the second half and chances were plentiful.
Within 10 minutes of the restart, Liam Kirton fired over the bar and then Hayward was even closer with a volley that was millimetres over the bar.
Eventually the breakthrough came. Butlin’s shot was blocked, as was Hayward’s follow up but then Jack Langston reached the ball and forced the ball over the line from 6 yards despite the attentions of a home defender.
In the final minute, substitute Ben Lund burst into the box and was brought down. Butlin’s spot kick was saved by Overton who held on to the rebound before Butlin could follow up.
