Robins boss looking to make history with new Vase run

Boss Matt Lovatt is out to make history with Dudley Town in this season’s FA Vase.

Lovatt and his players equalled the club’s best ever run in the competition when they reached last season’s second round and are aiming to go at least one better this time around.

After beating Heath Hayes last month, the Robins next host Stone Old Alleynians tomorrow in the second qualifying round.

Lovatt said: “Vase games have a different feel to them compared with league matches. There is something special about them.

“We had a really good run in the competition last year and you always want to do better. Going further this season is definitely the aim.”

In addition to a place in the first round proper, the winners of tomorrow’s tie will also earn £750 prize money.

But Lovatt knows his players can take nothing for granted against Old Alleynians, who play in Division One South of the North West Counties League.

“We’ve had them watched and they are a good team. They play football in the right way,” said Lovatt. “We know we will need to be right bang at it in order to get through. But we are in good shape, confidence is high and I’ve got pretty much a fully-fit squad to choose from.”

The Robins head into the tie on the back of last weekend’s 4-1 win over Pershore Town, a result which continued their perfect start to the West Midlands Premier League season.

A crowd of 138 were at the Aspray Arena to watch and Lovatt hopes for an even bigger backing tomorrow.

He said: “When you consider how bad the weather was last Saturday, to get a crowd of that size was really encouraging. I think everyone who came along was impressed with the club both on and off the pitch.

“We are hoping a few more will come through the gate on Saturday, perhaps even pushing up toward the 300 capacity we are currently allowed.”

Dudley Sports also have home advantage in the competition as they take on West Midlands League rivals Littleton, while Darlaston Town face a trip to Studley.

Midland League Premier Division outfit Tividale welcome Stapenhill, who ply their trade in the division below.
