Ian Rowe not confident over Sporting Khalsa promotion

Ian Rowe fears Sporting Khalsa’s hard work could count for nothing after the Midland League season was brought to a close.

The cornavirus pandemic has forced semi-professional leagues across the country to call time on the current campaign.

And now a decision must be made on a formula to decide final league placings or to void the season.

Under a points per game system, Khalsa would finish second and miss out on one of the 18 automatic promotion places from the various step five leagues. But they would be eligible for a play-off to determine if they gained promotion, against a side from the league they are bidding to reach.

But the chances of any football being played in the near future are non-existent, leaving Rowe fearing the worst. And to add to his frustration there is controversy surrounding the final weekend of action.

“We would finish second if the league was decided on points per game,” said Rowe. “For 90 per cent of the season we have been top on points per game, but were overtaken by Coventry on the final weekend games were played.

“And that raises an issue because our game with Walsall Wood was called off due to coronavirus while some sides were allowed to play.

“The league really should have just said no games at all.

“We want promotion. The club is geared up for the level above, and myself and the players want to test ourselves at that level.

“It would be devastating if the season was declared null and void, but if you want my honest opinion I can see that happening.

“I hope it doesn’t, I hope they can find a way to ensure sides are promoted.

“It’s a really complicated situation and we are just in limbo.

“At the start of the season the FA said 18 teams from across step five would be promoted – the 11 league winners and the seven second-placed teams with the best points per game average.

“Then the remaining four runners-up would have a play-off.. We are one of those four sides, but there is no chance of that being played.

“So where that leaves us, I just don’t know. Hopefully we will have a decision soon.”
