It was no picnic for Boro at Marston Road as the visitors defied a three-division gap to go toe-to-toe with Neil Kitching’s men.

Finishing proved the difference in the end with Jack Sherratt getting Stafford off the perfect start eight minutes in.

The midfielder repeated his trick from Saturday’s hard-fought victory at Witton Albion, rifling in a 25-yard rocket after Kieren Westwood’s attempt had been headed out.

Both teams played at a good pace and snapped into challenges with Dimitri Dunkley forcing a fine double save from home keeper Adam Whitehouse.

Sherratt then turned provider as Stafford doubled their advantage, bending in the free-kick that saw Kyle Perry glance in the second to settle any nerves before half-time.

It was tough on Sporting who continued to compete well but the game was up 10 minutes into the second half.

Neat and tidy approach play got Tyrell Waite around his marker Chad Degville-Cross to fire in the ammunition for Massiah McDonald to rubber stamp victory with a tap-in.

Jon Letford pulled one back on the break, slotting past the onrushing Whitehouse from 15 yards after good work from Dunkley but Stafford remained in control late on.

The hosts might have extended their lead 15 minutes from the end but McDonald’s goal-bound effort was blocked on the line by the face of Degville-Cross.
