Having been promoted after finishing second in Division One last season, they are fifth in the table after 13 games – eight wins and five losses.

They won 1-0 at AFC Bridgnorth on Saturday thanks to a sweet strike from substitute Nyle Bernard.

That was just the response Gill was looking for following a 6-0 thrashing at Wolverhampton Casuals last Tuesday.

“We had a bit of a tough week but then we went to Bridgnorth and got the win,” he said.

“It is a tough pitch and it’s in an appalling condition at the moment, to be honest.

“We like to play so it was very difficult and we lost two strikers early on – Scott Sandland did his hamstring and then Kieran Cook went over on his ankle.

“Nyle came on and scored a great goal and it was important after Tuesday’s shocking result to come up with a response. We did just that.”

Gill insists that, unlike some other teams in the league, Wednesfield do not pay their players.

The emphasis is on promoting from within and he added: “We think we have had a great start, the players have done really well. We had six under-18s in the squad on Saturday.

“In the next three years, we are looking to push on.

“We don’t have anything in terms of wages and they key is to grow our own and, eventually, look to get out of the league.

“We feel that we can turn up and give anybody in this league a good game.”

Also in the division, Wolverhampton Sporting saw their perfect 10-game winning run come to an end. They lost 3-2 to Tividale at Pride Park but are still top of the league.

Wolverhampton Casuals kept up their fine form as they beat Black Country Rangers 4-0 while Cradley Town remained second after being on the right end of a 4-3 thriller with Stone Old Alleynians.

In Division One, Team Dudley continue to lead the way. They beat Telford Juniors 5-2.

Meanwhile, in the Midland League Premier, Sporting Khalsa have climbed to fourth after a 1-0 win at Quorn, Leon Miles the scorer.

Lye Town drew 1-1 with Coleshill Town and AFC Wulfrunians were beaten 3-1 by Westfields.

In the North West Counties League Division One, Eccleshall lost 4-2 at home to Holker Old Boys. Harvey Collins and Dwayne Spence scored for the hosts.
