Aston Villa waiting for Trezeguet news

Villa fear Trezeguet could face a lengthy spell out after sustaining a potentially serious knee injury in Saturday’s defeat at Liverpool.

The Egypt international left the Anfield pitch in tears after being forced off in the 82nd minute and reports in his homeland yesterday claimed he had damaged his anterior cruciate ligament.

Villa were last night still to confirm the extent of the injury but boss Dean Smith expressed his concern for the winger shortly after the final whistle.

Trezeguet had fired a shot against the post before appearing to hurt his knee following a challenge by Reds defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The latter then struck a stoppage time winner as Villa fell to a 2-1 defeat which further dented their hopes of making a late challenge for European football.

Trezeguet’s injury has come at a time when Villa are still without captain Jack Grealish due to a shin problem. January signing Morgan Sanson was also absent from the matchday squad at Anfield due to a knee injury.

Defeat left Villa eight points adrift of the top six with only eight matches still to play.

The visitors had taken the lead through Ollie Watkins’ 12th Premier League goal of the season but were pegged back by Mo Salah’s second half leveller before Alexander-Arnold struck late.
