Wesley has been sidelined for nearly 15 months after rupturing knee ligaments in a Premier League match at Burnley on January 1, 2020.

The 24-year-old, who was Villa’s record signing when he joined from Club Brugge for £21million in the summer of 2019, only returned to full training earlier this month.

Today’s match is another gauge of his progress as he aims to make a return to first-team action before the end of the current season.

Defender Kortney Hause, who has himself been sidelined since early January with a foot injury, was also expected to be involved.

“We have arranged a match for Wesley, where we can get some game-time into him,” explained Villa boss Dean Smith. “It will be good for a lot of the players who have not been playing regularly to have some minutes.”

Villa return to Premier League action when they host Fulham on Sunday week.
