Villa hero Garry Thompson is confident Ollie Watkins will soon be back on the goal trail after saluting the record signing’s impact.

Watkins has gone eight matches without finding the net since netting six in his first seven Premier League appearances for the club following a £28million move from Brentford.

But Thompson, whose goals helped Villa win promotion from the Second Division in 1988, believes there is no big reason for the 25-year-old to worry.

He told the Express & Star: “He just needs to keep doing what he is doing and the goals will come, I’m sure of it.

“From a striker’s point of view if you are eight matches without scoring then it is on your mind. There is a tendency to start snatching at things.

“But watching Watkins I really feel there is no need for him to worry. He is providing everything you would want from a centre-forward and I’m certain the goals will follow.

“The one thing he can be assured of in this Villa team at the moment is he will get chances.”

Watkins is one of five players to have played every minute of Villa’s Premier League season so far.
