Manchester City’s match at Everton on Monday became the second top flight match to be postponed this season, following an outbreak at the former’s training ground, while the latest round of testing returned the highest number of positive cases.

That prompted Albion boss Sam Allardyce to call for a “circuit break” in the season to cope with the rising numbers.

Smith has outlined some of the protocols Villa’s squad is being asked to follow, which includes staying away from supermarkets. Players are also given daily updates on training and travel arrangements by the club’s medical staff.

“I am always concerned but we have some very good protocols in the Premier League and football at the moment,” said Smith.

“We have to be extra vigilant, not just as footballers but as people. We can’t risk going into shops when it is busy.

“The players realise if they contract the virus they have to isolate for 10 days and they want to be part of this group. There are precautions that are being taken.”
